See? I'm a trendsetter.

WASHINGTON – Former Sen. Tom Daschle, picked by President Barack Obama to lead his health reform efforts, recently filed amended tax returns to report $128,203 in back taxes and $11,964 in interest, according to a Senate document obtained by The Associated Press.

The White House acknowledged Friday that "some tax issues" had emerged in connection with the nomination, but a spokesman said the president is confident the former Senate Democratic leader will be confirmed as the new health secretary.

But if you're going to be a tax cheat, Mister Daschle, at least give the appearance of doing it out of principle.

It's like --and, gosh, it's been so long now since I've paid any income tax I can't even remember how it all started-- but it's an empowering feeling, really, just leaning over the edge of the stage here and taking my hand out of my pocket and aligning it like some lumbering crane right in front of your face, ratcheting up an enormous, spring-like potential energy in my middle finger, its destructive power only barely held back by my thumb and --boink!-- letting the bird fly right in your face.

Hi, thieves! Cheats!

Criminals one and all.
